Diagnostic instruments

What we bring to site

Thermal imaging, vibration analysis, insulation testing and scopes — and the specific question each one answers.

The difference between a technician and a parts-swapper is not experience. It is instruments. A good technician takes a reading; a guesser orders a part and hopes.

Here is what we bring to your site, and what each one actually answers.

Thermal imaging camera

Finds heat where there should not be any. A loose or corroded connection runs hot long before it fails, an overloaded conductor shows up against its neighbours, and a bearing starting to go dry is warm before it is loud.

What it answers: which of these three terminations is the bad one, without shutting anything down. Is this motor running hot, or does it just feel hot? Is this bearing failing, or is the housing simply near a heat source?

Most of its value is preventive. A thermal survey during a scheduled visit finds the failures that would otherwise become the 2am phone call — which is exactly what a PM agreement is for.

Vibration analyser

Reads the frequency spectrum of a running machine. Every fault has a signature, and they do not look alike once you can see the peaks: imbalance shows at running speed, misalignment at twice it, bearing defects at their own calculated frequencies, looseness as a whole family of harmonics.

What it answers: the machine is vibrating — is it imbalance, misalignment, a bearing, or the baseplate? Those have four different repairs and three of them are wasted if you pick wrong.

We have published the method as a free vibration spectrum trainer and a bearing failure analysis trainer. Have a look at how the readings separate the causes.

Megger / insulation tester

Applies a high DC voltage across motor windings to ground and measures how much leaks. Insulation degrades gradually — moisture, heat, contamination, age — and a megger reading tracked over time turns a surprise motor failure into a scheduled replacement.

What it answers: is this motor about to fail, or did it trip for some other reason? Should we rewind it or replace it? Is that new motor actually good before we install it?

A multimeter cannot do this. Winding-to-winding resistance at low voltage can look perfect on a motor whose insulation breaks down at operating voltage.

Oscilloscopes

For signals a multimeter averages into meaninglessness. VFD output is not a sine wave, encoder pulses are not a voltage, and an intermittent fault that lasts milliseconds does not exist as far as a meter is concerned.

What it answers: what is this drive actually putting out? Why does the PLC see this sensor as noisy? What happens in the instant before the fault trips?

Meters, clamps and the ordinary things

Multimeters, clamp meters, and the rest of the kit. Not glamorous, but most faults are found by someone taking voltage and current readings in the right order rather than by an expensive instrument. That order is the thing we teach in every one of our 32 troubleshooting trainers.

The instrument matters less than the sequence

Every trainer we have published works the same way: take readings in order, record them, and eliminate causes rather than confirm a hunch. That habit came from military technical training, and it is why we arrive with instruments rather than a parts list.

What this means for your invoice

Diagnosis costs an hour. Replacing the wrong part costs the part, the labour, the second outage when it fails again, and the production you lost both times. Instruments are how the first number stays small.
